Later this year, the first non-player or coach will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Amazingly, the honoree isn’t a mascot, or a dog, or a fictional character (sorry Rudy). The designation belongs to the Goodyear Blimp, which has hovered over 2,000 games since 1955. To commemorate the event, and to celebrate 150 years of college football, Goodyear just listed its blimp on Airbnb for three nights at the end of October.
The University of Michigan hosts Notre Dame for a huge game on October 26th in Ann Arbor, and the blimp will be flying over the stadium. In the week before, Goodyear Chief Pilot Jerry Hissem will “host” guests on three different days (October 22, 23 and 24), to literally spend the night in the blimp/its hangar in Mogadore, Ohio. And you know what — it looks comfier than a decent number of home-share clunkers we’ve sampled over the years.
The gondola interior has a bed, a couch and a couple armchairs, plus a bookshelf full of … iconic blimp literature? Meanwhile, the hangar’s “patio” features a flat-screen TV loaded up with famous rivalry games from college football history, a foosball table and life-sized Jenga. The site also appears to be near a lake, and guests will have the opportunity to play cornhole or toast s’mores in a fire-pit.
Just for your own edification: Goodyear has not operated the same blimp all these years. In fact, the latest iteration isn’t technically a blimp; it’s one of three “semi-rigid airships.” But it’s still really freaking cool, obviously. While this isn’t a contest, you’re going to need some twitchy fingers on October 15th, when booking goes live. Bookmark this page and head back on October 15th for a chance to secure a one-night stay. It’ll run you $150.
