Japan is one of the most technologically-advanced corners of the world, and train travel through the country is no exception.
In the ultimate fusion of technology and sophistication, the 10-car luxury Train Suite Shiki-shima recently made its maiden voyage from Tokyo to Hokkaido.
It’s not hard to spot. With its champagne-gold exterior and ultra-modern, triangular windows, the sleek train looks like it was inspired by a sports car. And it was.
The designer, Ken Kiyoyuki Okuyama, who has worked with Ferrari, incorporates traditional Japanese elements like washi paper, lacquer and wood with more modern luxury features.
Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows in one of the train’s two observatory decks ensure guests don’t miss any of Japan’s scenic countryside as they relax on plush couches en route to their destination.
There are other luxury touches to look at: A classic dining car fitted is with linens and nickel silverware designed by cutlery expert Yamazaki Kinzoku Kogyo.
Aboard, passengers are greeted by a perfectly manicured staff sporting Uniqlo threads, custom designed by Uniqlo’s Creative Director Noki Takizawa. And when it’s time for bed, guests can relax in the lounge near a fireplace or retire in the sleeper train, which includes 17 suites.
Customers do pay for the privilege. The price tag for a one-way trip along the East Japan Railway Co. is $10,000 per person.
