The next time you get an hourlong Swedish massage, it could be while floating in the middle of the Arctic Circle.
Swedish company Arctic Bath AB will be launching its floating luxury hotel and spa space in 2018, but has provided RCL with a rather detailed sneak peek of what guests might expect within its walls.
The structure’s architecture and design are being headed up by Bertil Harström and Johan Kauppi, who are known for past design advancements such as sound-absorbing office furniture.
Located in the village of Harads in the Swedish Lapland—just 30 miles south of the Arctic Circle—the floating structure will be built on the Lule River and remain open all year round. In the summer, the structure will bob freely with the river’s waves; in the winter, it will be frozen in place. The hotel will include seven separate buildings, all connected into a united floating structure.
Harström and Kauppi were inspired to create the project after seeing the area’s Treehotel come to fruition (another local attraction worth a reservation). The inspiration for the structure’s Lincoln-Log-esque design, Arctic Bath AB tells RCL, comes from the river’s logging history and the logjams that used to occur along its banks.
The hotel will only accommodate 12 guests at launch, as it will include just six, two-person rooms. The spa portion will feature cold baths; several saunas; and a number of spa treatments. The floating or frozen structure will also include a reception area, design shop, restaurant, lounge, and bar—where our guess is everything will be on ice, whether you like it or not.
