That tried-and-true MO has nothing on the American Prairie Reserve’s well-appointed Montana yurts, though, which’ll allow you to stay deep in the Big Sky steppe with up to nine friends … for a steady rate of $125 a night. ($14 per person, people!)
The American Prairie Reserve is a nonprofit that purchases and protects private land; their goal is essentially to stitch together the country’s northern plains as a way to conserve the region’s diverse and often extensively targeted flora and fauna. In other words, they want to keep a beautiful region beautiful, and you can help them by spending a few days in one of the Reserve’s yurt complexes.
They have two: the John and Margaret Craighead Hut, and the Founders Hut. Each is located in the Missouri River Valley, with easy access to hiking, biking, fishing, paddling and cross-country skiing (n.b. those visiting past October 20th will have to approach the huts using one of these methods because … winter). Each yurt comes equipped with a functioning kitchen, bed barracks and library. Oh, and they’re powered with solar panels.
