The 2019 NFL Season Could be the Year of the Broken Record

There are a number of big records that could fall in the upcoming season

In the NFL, records, like the legs of Washington quarterbacks, were made to be broken.

Last season, we saw Drew Brees break Peyton Manning’s record for all-time passing yards as well as shatter his own mark for completion percentage in a season. This year, Brees is praised to break another one of Manning’s marks — but he may have some competition.

Over the course of his 17 NFL seasons, Manning tossed 539 touchdown passes, the most ever by a quarterback.

Entering the 2019 season, Brees is just 19 touchdowns back of Manning and will pass him if he throws 20. That seems very likely to happen as Brees has at least 20 touchdown passes in every single one of his seasons with the New Orleans Saints. While Tom Brady can’t make the claim with regard to his years with the New England Patriots, the 41-year-old quarterback will likely also pass Manning this year as needs just 23 TD tosses to do so.

Another record which has the chance to fall this season is Calvin Johnson’s single-season receiving yards mark of 1,964 yards.

Set in 2012, the former Lion’s mark could be in trouble depending on how the league’s decision to make all calls (and non-calls) reviewable impacts play on the field. On the one hand, more receiving yards could come off the board and be replaced with penalty yards. On the other, defenders could be less inclined to play physically on receivers to avoid penalties, leading to more receptions and more yardage than ever before.

Should play on the field goes the latter route, expect pass-catchers like Julio Jones, Odell Beckham, Michael Thomas and JuJu Smith-Schuster to have an outside shot at breaking Johnson’s record with the elusive 2,000-yard season.
