After meeting with renowned foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson on Friday (Nov. 1), Cam Newton will reportedly not have surgery to repair his Lisfranc injury. Anderson did not recommend the Carolina Panthers quarterback go under the knife, but there is still no timetable on his potential return.
Coach Ron Rivera admitted that Newton, who got the second opinion from Anderson after not seeing progress in his foot since he re-aggravated the injury (originally sustained in a preseason game) during Week 2, has been frustrated with not being able to play.
“He wants to compete so badly,” Rivera said. “I did get the sense he was frustrated.” Kyle Allen will start again for the Panthers as they take on the Tennessee Titans on Sunday (Nov. 3). Allen has thrown for 1,059 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 62.3 percent of his passes in Newton’s absence.
Newton will reportedly be out at least “several more weeks,” and as NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports, “being placed on injured reserve is on the table” for him. For now, the hope is that a few more weeks’ rest will allow the injury to heal without resorting to a surgery that would knock the quarterback out for months.
“We’ve got to make sure he’s ready,” Rivera said. “The last update I got, more so than anything else is he’s going through his rehab. We’ll see. Right now, we’re going into this game with Kyle as the starter.”
