All good things must come to an end, but if you’re a Patriots fan, this one’s gotta sting: after 13 consecutive wins — including playoff games — dating back to December 2018, the team finally experienced its first loss of the season, falling to the Baltimore Ravens 37-20 on Sunday (Nov. 3).
The Patriots dropped to 8-1 with the loss, leaving the San Francisco 49ers (8-0) as the NFL’s only undefeated team. They fell behind 17-0 early, thanks in part to their defense allowing 155 rushing yards in the first half.
“We knew they had one of the best running attacks in the NFL this year and they were able to really run the ball, we struggled stopping the run, and it pretty much gave them control of the game,” safety Devin McCourty told reporters after the game. “They were able to play it on their terms, and that’s what hurt us the most.”
Tom Brady finished 30-of-46 for 285 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson went 17-of-23 for 163 yards with one touchdown, and at age 22, he becomes the youngest QB in the Super Bowl era to defeat a team that entered the game 8-0 or better.
“Losses always find a way to recalibrate how you see yourself,” Brady said after the game. “And we obviously have a lot of work to do. So just wasn’t obviously good enough. Get beat by 17 points, that’s not what we’re all about. I give the Ravens credit. I think they played really well, took advantage of their opportunities. And that’s what it takes.”
