Land Cruisers and Hot Rods Shouldn’t Mix. But They Did, and It’s Glorious.

This stupid, impractical Franken-car somehow works

The best way to traverse the backcountry of South Africa? A hot rod, of course.

But rather than going with a classic Model T, the talented builders at Allers Rods & Customs decided to go full Island of Dr. Moreau on a ’70s Toyota Land Cruiser.

No objections here.

The one-of-a-kind beast features an in-house front suspension, widened wheels and a differential borrowed from a Land Rover Discovery. The seats were pulled from a Jeep Wrangler and the headlights from a VW Golf 1. For fun, there’s a Lexus radio. And for a different kind of fun, there’s a Momo steering wheel, a Lexus 1UZ V8 with 300 ponies and a super-secure roll cage. And to complete the job, the FJ 40 Hot Rod was finished in the original ‘76 Toyota period-correct paint color.

Equal parts intense and eye-catching, it’s straight out of Doc Frankenstein’s garage, but we love it.
