I had one of the original GoPro models and filmed everything with it. I hooked it to a wakesurf board, a bike, a goat (that didn’t work so well), but once I got a smartphone with a good camera I stopped using it. I figured, smartphones are so capable now — why do I need to worry about this extra device?

Then I picked up a GoPro Hero7, its second most recent action camera, and promptly had my entire videographic worldview changed. The video was impossibly smooth, the picture quality cinematic, and the ease of use (in terms of sharing from the camera directly to my phone via their user-friendly app) was the cherry on top. Of course, right now might seem like an odd time to purchase a travel-ready, outdoor-built action camera — if it were not for the rare discounts.

Right now, GoPro is taking $100 off both its newest Hero8 model and the slightly older Hero7 model that I recommend to everyone. Not only that, but they’re throwing in a 32GB Sandisk microSD card (something I didn’t get when I bought mine …). You may be able to find better prices on older, refurbished models, but these are brand new and direct from the company, feature full warranties and include bonus gear. You can’t beat it.

But you can find a similarly good deal on another action camera. If you’ve been looking for an alternative to GoPro, DJI makes a worthy competitor called the Osmo Action, and right now it is also heavily discounted — on their website, you can nab it for a rare $140 off.
