For years, rain jackets were coated with durable water repellent (DWR), via a fluorocarbon-based treatment that made the surface tough and non-permeable but unfortunately released toxic byproducts into the environment. Recently, brands have looked for ways to create waterproof wares by different means, and Marmot’s NanoPro membrane is one of the best examples.

The California-based brand’s PreCip Eco Jacket puts the NanoPro laminate to good use atop a recycled nylon, microporous fabric that lets air in without letting in any water. This jacket also packs down into its own pocket, comes equipped with zippers under each arm for extra ventilation and features an adjustable hood that can roll down into the collar. This is a great rain jacket to just always have in a backpack or car, so you’re ready whenever thunderheads arrive. It’s currently discounted down to $65 in select colors on Backcountry.
