In name, it sounds like a Universal Studios attraction: a safari base off the Skeleton Coast called Shipwreck Lodge. But this is no movie set: it’s a new getaway from Natural Selection Safaris that opened June 1st just inland of the Namibian coast.
There are 10 ensuite rooms with family accomodations available. A swimming pool and wifi provide creature comforts, and meal and drinks included with your ticket (upgrades available). As for the safari portion of the getaway: activities include 4×4 excursions, wildlife watching, exploring shipwrecks and fishing.
The lodge is on a remote piece of land in the Skeleton Coast National Park between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers, where more than 1,000 downed ships are strewn about the coast, having sailed astray due to offshore rocks and the intense fog that rolls off the Atlantic. Before the ships took the stage, animal remains gave the name weight, and even the present-day cabins have been built to resemble nautical wreckage.
Come sundown, guests will head to the resorty’s restaurant, with its wraparound veranda and views of both the sand dunes and the Atlantic. Shipwreck Lodge not quite your fancy? The outfitter has plans for three new safaris coming soon to Namibia and South Africa, and also hosts a handful throughout Botswana.
