Days after the XFL announced it was canceling its season, firing all employees and filing for bankruptcy, its former commissioner filed a wrongful-termination lawsuit against owner Vince McMahon in federal court. In his lawsuit, former XFL commissioner Oliver Luck alleges through his attorneys that McMahon owes him the money he was guaranteed when he signed on with the startup league in May 2018, believed to be approximately $20 million.
“Mr. Luck wholly disputes and rejects the allegations set forth in the termination letter and contends they are pretextual and devoid of merit,” the lawsuit said.
McMahon is the CEO of the WWE and the owner of Alpha Entertainment, the former parent company of the XFL. In its bankruptcy filing, Alpha Entertainment claimed it had liabilities of $10 million to $50 million and up to 5,000 creditors. Luck was not listed as one of them in the filing.
“Oliver Luck’s services as commissioner and CEO of the XFL were terminated by a letter sent to him on April 9, 2020, which explained the reasons for the termination,” McMahon’s lawyer Jerry McDevitt told The Action Network. “As to the lawsuit he filed, his allegations will be disputed and the position of Mr. McMahon will be set forth in our response to his lawsuit.”
The XFL had played just five weeks of its season when it folded in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
