As part of the massive overhaul and rebranding that is underway inside the Beltway, the Washington Football Team has hired former NFL running back Jason Wright as team president, making him the first Black team president in league history.
Wright, who played seven years in the NFL with four teams after entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern, is only the fourth former player to ascend to that role and is now the youngest team president in the league. During his NFL career, he tallied 1,214 rushing and receiving yards combined to go along with five touchdowns.
Prior to taking the job with Washington, Wright, who retired in 2010, had been working at international consulting firm McKinsey & Company.
“This team, at this time, is an ideal opportunity for me,” Wright said in a statement. “The transformation of the Washington Football Team is happening across all aspects of the organization — from football to operations to branding to culture — and will make us a truly modern and aspirational franchise. We want to set new standards for the NFL.”
Wright, 38, replaces Bruce Allen and will head the organization’s business divisions, which includes operations, finance, sales and marketing. He will certainly have his work cut out for him as the team attempts to work its way out from underneath a sex scandal while changing its name.

In other news relating to Washington’s NFL franchise, quarterback Alex Smith has been cleared to resume football activities after suffering a gruesome leg injury almost two years ago.
Since suffering the injury in November of 2018, Smith has been rehabbing with the expectation of getting back onto the field and had to undergo 17 surgeries on his leg in order to make that happen.
Washington head coach Ron Rivera said that Smith will be included in the quarterback competition for the upcoming season. Currently, second-year QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. and second-year signal-caller Kyle Allen are ahead of him on the depth chart.
