A year after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by Columbus following a season where they tied the NHL single-season wins record and won the Presidents’ Trophy, the Tampa Bay Lightning are Stanley Cup champions.
The Lightning got goals from Brayden Point and Blake Coleman and a 22-save shutout by Andrei Vasilevskiy in Game 6 to knock off the Dallas Stars 2-0 and capture their first championship since winning it all in 2004.
The win brings the NHL postseason to a close, an event that was staged nearly entirely in quarantine in Canada due to the pandemic.
“It takes a lot to be in a bubble for 80 days or whatever long it was,” said defenseman Victor Hedman, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. “But it’s all worth it now. We’re coming home with the Cup.”
The Lightning outshot the Stars 29-22 in the game, and it was fitting that Point scored in the win as he led all players in the postseason with 14 goals.
“The beauty of our team is everyone was chipping in,” Point said. “We got contributions from anyone and everyone at different times, and that’s what makes this win so special.”
