Buried in a Bleacher Report piece about the demise of the season for the Warriors is a nugget that makes the outlook for Golden State look even bleaker.
According to a team source, the hand fracture which was originally thought to keep Steph Curry sidelined for a number of months is “worse than originally thought.” As a result, it’s “unlikely” that the two-time MVP plays again this season.
Without Curry in the lineup, the Warriors have struggled to start the season and currently sit at 2-6 in a Western Conference where playoff teams will almost assuredly need to have .500 or better records to qualify.
With Kevin Durant in Brooklyn, Klay Thompson also out for the season due to injury and Curry now expected to join him, Draymond Green is the only member of Golden State’s championship core who is still healthy and playing for the team.
Though Green, who has been fairly vocal over the past five seasons as Golden State has made annual runs to the NBA Finals, is the last man standing, no one feels sorry for him.
“You think anybody in the league has any empathy for Draymond Green?” Said Spurs forward Rudy Gay. “No, hell no. He’s a good dude and everything, but everybody has their time and everybody has their day, and it’s time for another team to step up. They took full advantage of their time at the top. And not just them—the fans, too. This is the real NBA, man. You don’t have some of the best players in the league. You still have some great players, but those wins aren’t going to come as easy no more.”
