Former All-Pro quarterback Carson Palmer, who played seven seasons in Cincinnati and went 46-51 during the regular season with two playoff appearances (both losses), is cautioning Joe Burrow about playing for the Bengals.

Burrow, who had one of the best seasons in college football history while leading the LSU Tigers to the national championship, is presumed to be Cincinnati’s target in the upcoming draft as the Bengals have the No. 1 pick after going 1-15 last season.

In an interview with The D.A. Show on CBS Sports Radio, Palmer – who forced his way out of town and went on to have success with the Arizona Cardinals — warned Burrow about being part of the Bengals organization.

“That’s why I wanted out: I never felt like the (Bengals’) organization was really trying to win a Super Bowl, and really chasing the Super Bowl,” Palmer said. “Because that’s what today’s day and age is. The game today is you can’t just hope you draft well and not go after free agents and you just end up in the Super Bowl. You gotta go get it … You look at what Bob Kraft’s done. You look at the teams that have had success year in and year out. You look at what goes on in Baltimore. I mean, that team is always good. That team is doing whatever it takes. They are willing to do whatever it takes to win. And that’s why they’re consistently in the playoffs, regardless of who their quarterback is.”

Should Cincinnati take Burrow, the organization will have to make it clear they are serious about improving as the Heisman winner said he’s only interested in going to a franchise that’s committed to winning.

“You want to go No. 1, but you also want to go to a great organization that’s committed to winning Super Bowls,” Burrow said in an interview Friday morning on The Dan Patrick Show.

If the Bengals do end up taking Burrow with the top pick, it will mark the first time since 2003 that the Bengals have gotten the No. 1 overall pick and then used that pick on a quarterback.

When that was the case in 2003, the team drafted Palmer.
