ESPN’s Katie Nolan Reveals When She Knew It Was Over at Fox

An incident at the Super Bowl involving Cris Carter may have been the final straw.

In a new interview with GQ, outspoken television personality Katie Nolan opened up about when she knew her days at Fox were over and her new life at ESPN.

Known for delivering one-liners that are funny but also have deeper points to them, Nolan has moved around a lot in her career and has stood out as a female voice in a business that is generally dominated by men.

Her talent eventually landed her a job hosting a show on FS1 called Garbage Time with Katie Nolan. The show was successful and, when Nolan wanted to spend more time figuring it out creatively before signing a contract extension, she was put on the shelf.

There was also a moment at the Super Bowl, after Fox had shoehorned a segment with Cris Carter onto Nolan’s show despite her protests, that she knew her time there was likely done.

“Right before the Super Bowl, they had pitched me: ‘You’ll move out to L.A. You’ll have an hour a day. You’ll have this time slot. We’ll get you a studio. We’re going to reformat it,’” she said. “All things that I was like, ‘This kind of sounds great.’ Then I went to the Super Bowl. That happened. I was like, that’s it. I’m done. I’m leaving. I just didn’t trust that I would move my life to L.A. and they would protect it or listen to me about it. They wanted me to sign the deal before we developed the show. That was my sticking point.”

Nolan, however, stressed that she’s not angry: “I had to make a call and it’s the call I made and I guess we’ll see if it’s the right one or the wrong one.”

Eventually, it became obvious Nolan would leave Fox for ESPN and she officially signed with the Worldwide Leader in October of last year.

Kept on smaller projects for the past year, Nolan is now rolling out a program called Always Late With Katie Nolan which is basically a sports version of John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight.

It airs Wednesdays on or ESPN+, the network’s streaming subscription service.
