Chiefs Defeat 49ers for First Super Bowl Victory in 50 Years
Kansas City beats San Francisco 31-20

After some late theatrics from Patrick Mahomes and company, the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions for the first time in 50 years. After being limited to just 10 points by the San Francisco 49ers’ defense in the first half and trailing 20-10 in the third quarter, the Chiefs’ offense exploded late in the fourth quarter with three straight touchdown drives for a final score of 31-20.

The 49ers struck first with a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter, but they were answered with a 75-yard Chiefs touchdown drive that made it 7-3. After a Chiefs field goal, a Jimmy Garoppolo interception and a 15-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo to Kyle Juszcyk, the game was tied 10-10 at halftime.
Another Robbie Gould field goal for the 49ers and a Raheem Mostert touchdown in the third quarter made it seem as though the 49ers had the game put away, but Mahomes found Travis Kelce in the endzone with 6:13 remaining to cut the 49ers’ lead to three and hit Damien Williams with a touchdown pass on third-and-goal to put the Chiefs ahead 24-20.
There was still time for the 49ers to respond, but Garoppolo was sacked on fourth down, allowing the Chiefs an opportunity to score again, which they did thanks to a Williams touchdown with just 1:12 remaining, giving the franchise its first Super Bowl victory since 1970.
