A 22-year-old member of the Kennedy family is dead after suffering an apparent overdose at the family compound in Massachusetts on Thursday.
According to two people close to the family, 22-year-old Saoirse Kennedy Hill was suffering from overdose symptoms when emergency responders were called to the compound. She was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and pronounced dead, The New York Times reported.
Kennedy Hill was the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill and the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy.
A communication major at Boston College, Kennedy Hill had struggled with depression during her young life.
“Our hearts are shattered by the loss of our beloved Saoirse,” the Kennedy family said in a statement. “Her life was filled with hope, promise and love.”
It is another sad note in the Kennedy legacy as last month marked the 50th anniversary of Chappaquiddick. During that family tragedy, Edward Kennedy drove off a bridge on an island next to Martha’s Vineyard and killed his 28-year-old passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne.
Kennedy Hill’s grandmother, Ethel Kennedy, said in a statement: “The world is a little less beautiful today.”
Though an official cause of death has not bee released by officials, police are investigating the incident as a “reported unattended death.”
