It may be a while yet before live music returns to normal, but this new read might help tide fans over: singer-songwriter, actor and longtime E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt has announced a new memoir due out Sept. 28.
Rolling Stone reports that the book will cover Van Zandt’s activism, especially fighting South African apartheid. (In 1985, he put together the Sun City album, which featured contributions from the likes of Keith Richards, Peter Gabriel, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Bono, Gil Scott-Heron and Ringo Starr, to raise awareness for the cause.) It will also delve into his time acting on The Sopranos, his reunion with the E Street Band and his radio show Underground Garage.
“I’ve seen enough things that could be useful that justified writing them down and sharing them,” Van Zandt said in a statement. “As far as my life story? Well I hope this book explains it to me!”
The book’s publisher, Mary Ann Naples, issued a statement of her own about the project, saying, “Stevie Van Zandt’s story is a singular arc in American culture. From his vantage point as a witness to the renaissance era of rock & roll to consequential activism and a third act in groundbreaking television, Hachette Books is proud to bring Van Zandt’s odyssey to readers.”
