In recent years, there’s been a trend of famous guitarists selling off some or all of their collections. David Gilmour did just that a few years ago, with proceeds from the sale going to charities dealing with climate change. Last summer, word came that Journey guitarist Neal Schon was also selling off 112 of his guitars — which, at the time, he said was to clear space “for some new arrivals.”

That may have been an understatement.

According to a new report from Ultimate Classic Rock, Schon has added 150 guitars to his collection since the start of the pandemic. Some people baked sourdough, others got into Peloton; Neal Schon bought guitars. We all have our enthusiasms, after all.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Schon offered more details about his buying habits. “I kept buying, buying, buying, buying, and it became like a hobby,” he said.

“That became the thing that I liked doing during the pandemic, besides writing new material,” he added — and noted that he had spent “a lot of money” on the guitars.

While Schon is a fan of vintage guitars, he revealed in the same interview that he’s less fond of Instagram. “There are so many scams,” he said. “I shut down imposters every day when I was on there and I just got so tired.” He’s since closed down his account — which, one assumes, gives him more time for his guitar collection.
