Watch: “Saturday Night Live” Pokes Fun at David Ortiz, Addresses His Shooting

Saturday Night Live had its season premiere last night (Sept. 28), and it spent some time addressing some of the major news stories it missed while on summer hiatus, including the shooting of Red Sox legend (and recurring Kenan Thompson character) David Ortiz.

The show brought out Thompson as Ortiz on Weekend Update to address the shooting, having him respond matter-of-factly, “It was bad!” when asked by Colin Jost how his summer went. The fictional Big Papi then went on to compare the hospitals in the Dominican Republic and Boston (“you know what they got at the Boston hospital? Medicine”) before returning to his usual bit of enthusiastically hawking knockoff products — including a wig service called Hairbnb and a Possible Burger (“is it real meat? It’s possible!”).

SNL also spent a good chunk of the premiere addressing the recent impeachment inquiry against Trump and debuting this year’s impressions of the Democratic presidential candidates (including Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris and the return of Larry David as Bernie Sanders). Host Woody Harrelson also took a moment during the goodnights to show his support for teen climate-change activist Greta Thunberg, thanking her and sporting a t-shirt with her face on it.

Next week the show will return with host Phoebe Waller-Bridge and musical guest Taylor Swift. Until then, check out the David Ortiz Weekend Update appearance below.
