Elon Musk is known for creating weird merchandise and then selling out of it — such as The Boring Company’s flamethrowers.
Well he’s done it again. Musk’s company Tesla added surfboards to its gift shop on Saturday. The surfboards, which were briefly available for $1,500 before they sold out, were created through a collaboration between Tesla Design Studio and Lost Surfboards. According to Mashable, the surfboards feature a “mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finished used on all (Tesla) cars.” The product’s description says that the surfboards were reinforced with carbon fiber “inspired by the interiors in Teslas.”
Tesla: We’re building a $35K car for the masses!
[years later]
Tesla: Heh, JK, maybe someday. How ’bout our expensive cars?
Consumers: Hey 🙁
Tesla: Here’s a flamethrower!
Consumers: Um
Tesla: More expensive cars!
Consumers: No.
Tesla: A surfboard!
Consumers: COME ON!— Adam Lasnik (@thatadamguy) July 28, 2018
In other news, Tesla dropped some new merch… It’s a limited edition surfboard. No, I don’t surf. But it’s red and matte black. So I snagged one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯https://t.co/2v2G7bnALC pic.twitter.com/aWuMYHK3JC

There was a wave of buyers for the 200 surfboards, wiping out the entire inventory. Anyone who ordered one can expect it to ship in 2-10 weeks. Some have made it to e-Bay, though with a cost of at least $4,000, according to Mashable.
