Stephen King and his wife Tabitha are ready to turn the page on their home in Maine and have asked the Bangor planning board to rezone their property so it can be used to house a non-profit organization.
According to The Associated Press, the Kings want to convert their home into a storage location for Stephen’s personal archives and convert a guest home they own next door into a writers’ residence.
The archives are currently held at the University of Maine, the Kings’ alma mater. If the Bangor board approves the request, the archives would be moved to their new home and would be available for viewing by appointment.
The home next door would be able to provide housing for up to five writers in residence at a time.
“The King Family has been wonderful to the City of Bangor over time and have donated literally millions of dollars to various causes in the community,” one of the city councilors, Ben Sprague, told Rolling Stone. “Preserving his legacy here in Bangor is important for this community.”
Though the home in Bangor, which served as the basis for the town of Derry in the IT movies, was where the Kings raised their children and had been their primary residence for years, they mainly spend their time at a home in Florida and another Maine property in Oxford County.
