The cost of keeping Mark Zuckerberg safe skyrocketed to nearly $23 million following Facebook’s tumultuous 2018.
So reveals a regulatory filing on Friday, which shows that the social network CEO’s total compensation package for the 12 months ended 31 December 2018, Business Insider reports.
While Zuckerberg drew a base salary of $1, the CEO’s “other” compensation was noted as $22.6 million. Of that massive sum, almost $20 million, up from about $9.1 million in 2017, went for personal security for himself and his family. Zuckerberg is married to Priscilla Chan and they have two children together.
The high cost of keeping Zuckerberg out of harm’s way comes as Facebook has been embroiled in various scandals in what has been called “a year from hell” for the company. The company has faced public outrage over its role in the Cambridge Analytica data breach, privacy concerns and the spread of disinformation and propaganda online.
The Facebook SEC filing also revealed that Sheryl Sandberg’s security costs also increased marginally from $2.7 million in 2017 to $2.9 million last year, reports Business Insider.
