In two days, it will be the weekend, and you will have earned it. But how will you spend it? Hit the Home Depot for some new wallpaper? Watch the numbers change on your fantasy football boxscore? Nap? You will do no such things. Instead, make this city your oyster. Here’s how.
Culver City: Saturday
Dick Brewer’s 10-foot gun circa ‘62. The wild-style twin fin of Martin Porter circa ‘84. A ‘65 Hap with original colorway intact. The California Gold Vintage Surfboard Auction has some choice sticks for serious collectors or just those interested in getting an upclose look at some surfing history. It’s hitting the Veterans Memorial Hall in Culver City this Saturday afternoon, so you’ve got time to catch the morning waves.
DTLA: Sat or Sun
Start: Apolis stitches duds with equal measures probity and style. They’re hosting a sample sale on Friday (check the inventory here). For lunch: hit up The Little Jewel of New Orleans for a roast beef po’ boy. Follow that with a little art-gazing at the just-anointed Broad Museum.
San Pedro: Sat or Sun
Once deemed roaches of the sea suitable only for inmate consumption, the humble lobster’s crawl from bottom-feeder to top-brass delicacy is a rags-to-riches tale that’s 100% American. Celebrating all that sweet meat: The Lobster Festival. You’ll be on the docks in San Pedro, cracking claws, swilling cold beer and head-bobbing to local acts like Black Crystal Wolf Kids.
Venice Beach: Sunday
The Abbot Kinney Festival, now 31 years old, brings all the hippies, gypsies and yuppies together for a block party. Expect live music, oat sodas and tons of art and stylish tees for sale.
