You never have a second chance to make a first impression. While that’s possibly an ongoing issue for your mother-in-law, it hasn’t been a problem for the original 1966 Shelby GT350.
This pre-production prototype was built so Ford and Carroll Shelby could smooth out the few wrinkles that had developed for the first model year of the car. Chassis No. SFM6S001 served as the primary test car for the ‘66 GT350 development program before being put out to pasture to appear at various events and photo shoots for Shelby American.
Like all subsequent ‘66 Shelby GT350s, No. SFM6S001 was powered by a high-performance V8 engine mated to a four-speed T10 manual transmission. However, unlike production versions of the powerful pony car, the prototype was converted into a GT350, and actually began life in the factory as a 1965 Fastback Mustang, a distinction that makes it even more unique.
Now available for auction in the wake of an extensive restoration job in 2011, the historic one-off GT350 is heading up the ramp at Barrett-Jackson’s 2018 Scottsdale Auction in January 2018.
