Surfing in the Rivers of Montana
To most, the concept of surfing in a land-locked state like Montana seems ludicrous. Some people try surfing the Great Lakes, but even that’s pretty difficult to do compared to whitewater rapids. Jordan Halland made a short film, called “Strong Water,” about two pioneers, Kevin Brown and Luke Rieker, who attempted something crazy—that actually worked. After Missoula’s river was cleaned up in 2006, Brown and Rieker helped to popularize river surfing in the town. Today, the two run one of Montana’s only surf shops.
