Banana Republic Proposes Inclusive Ivy With New “Athletics” Collection
Polos, pleats and pinstripes comprise the preppy capsule

The tradition of ivy style — that is, the prep-oriented manner of dressing that traces its origins to ivy leaguers and the investment bankers they’d grow up to be — is a seminal menswear style; it’s affected suiting, madras patchwork and affinity for all thing Brooks Brothers and J. Press have inspired generation after generation in dressing like they own a boat (they very well might) and enjoy discussing great works almost as much as they enjoy discussing the merits of an OCBD versus a polo shirt when it comes to layering their favorite cable-knit sweater. And those same folks will surprised to learn that Banana Republic Athletics is the newest entrant into the genre.

Banana Republic is taking a crack at the collegiate-inspired look, with a notable twist — a gender-inclusive capsule. The GAP-owned subsidiary, while a trusted business-casual stalwart, isn’t often associated with the cutting-edge of fashion, but the “Athletics” collection is surprisingly successful in its informal and generous cuts, thanks in part to the relaxed tailoring cues it’s borrowed from modern street style. A collation of archival looks and modern sensibly, it’s a refreshing proposal from the brand.
The best part? We can actually see ourselves wearing the entirety of the collection. With spring-ready zip polos and insignia-emblazoned blazers, the very informal formalwear plays well with everything from spring chinos to casual sneakers. It’s got the classic ivy hits for the conservative dresses, but pieces like a handsome pleated short or silk scarf for the sartorially daring, as well.
The Banana Republic “Athletics” collection is now available at Banana Republic, and retails from $20-$500. Shop the capsule below; there’s something for everybody, no matter how you do ivy.
