One of the most beloved parts of New York City is Central Park. Designers Yitan Sun and Jianshi Wu have a proposal that would redefine it. Their project “New York Horizon”, which won the eVolo Skyscraper Competition, calls for it to be converted into a sunken landscape with meadows, hills, and lakes that would allow for outdoor activities including hiking, climbing, and swimming as they aim to bring back to Central Park what they term “real nature.”
Central Park would also be surrounded by a mixed-used structure (the “sidescraper”), which would allow for construction without having to build up (as usually happens in Manhattan today): essentially, it would be a horizontal skyscraper, instead of a vertical one.
Explaining their objectives, the pair stated, “The ambition is to reverse the traditional relationship between landscape and architecture, in a way that every occupiable space has a direct connection to nature.”
