KUDU Is Your Entire Kitchen in One Grill, Basically

The only thing it won't do is the dishes

“Who doesn’t like to play with fire?” asks Stebin Horne in a buzz video for his newest invention, the KUDU Safari Braai Grill. “You show me one guy who doesn’t like to play with fire and I’ll say, ok, this grill isn’t for you.”

But for the rest of us, the KUDU is a godsend, allowing home pitmasters to cook a variety of meats and veggies at different levels of heat on the same surface.

Horne, who speaks with a Georgia drawl, got the idea for the device while visiting his wife’s family in South Africa. Her brothers are farmers who’d welded their own metal grills together into an modular rig that lent them greater control over cooking temps. Horne thought this was pretty neat, so he added a feature that converts the entire grill into a firepit, too. Once you’re done grilling, simply stack wood in a ring around the rim and presto, you’ve got a nice roaring fire for the evening.

KUDU comes with optional add-ons like a cast-iron skillet, rotisserie, breadmaker and a cast-iron sauté pan, which means it can accommodate pretty much any and all forms of open-flame cooking in a single unit.

It’s up on Kickstarter now, and for $649 you can get the whole kit and caboodle (grill, pit, griddle pan, cooking tongs, wood tongs and a bag of African braai wood).

It’s scheduled to deliver by mid-November. Just in time to lead you to tailgating glory.
