There may be no outdoor brand more internationally well-known than Patagonia. The California designer of clothing and gear got its start when founder Yvon Chouinard began making pitons in the late ’50s, living from his car on slim profits until he formed Chouinard Equipment in 1965. Chouinard formed Patagonia in 1973 with a tight-knit crew of family and friends, many of whom paved the way for outdoor gear as we know it today.
