What is it with Brooklynites and their desire to repurpose shipping containers into useful structures, like downtown marketplaces and swimming pools, instead of using them for their original purpose, i.e., trafficking counterfeit handbags?
Enjoy their latest family-focused rejiggering this weekend at Photoville: a sprawling exhibition of over 30 shipping containers transformed into temporary gallery spaces, opening today on Pier 3 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Photoville showcases works from artists and organizations from around the world, including a New York Times-curated exhibition on the decade of war from 9/11 to the present, to an in-depth exploration of the gang-ridden criminal underworld of Papua New Guinea.
The repurposed containers also host classes and seminars, like the International Center of Photography’s lesson on building a homemade camera, to the Center for Alternative Photography’s hands-on “tintype” demonstration, in which attendees receive 1800’s-style portraits printed on pieces of metal.
Also on hand: a “camera greenhouse” with over 3,000 painstakingly-created camera flowers, a shipping container-sized camera obscura, and a beer garden with suds from Brooklyn Brewery and a collection of NYC’s favorite food trucks.
There’s also a custom photo-themed dog run for four-legged friends – anything to keep them from sniffing around the shipping containers.
