The Gist

InsideHook Editor-in-Chief Mike Conklin challenges the notion of abandoning heavy denim for spring, instead highlighting a massive Levi's sale with deep discounts across the site. He then shares his personal recommendations, focusing on classic straight-fit jeans and versatile outerwear perfect for the season.

Key Takeaways

  • Levi's is offering 30% off most items, with an additional 40% discount on already reduced merchandise.
  • His top denim picks include classic straight fits like the 501 and 505 styles.
  • Recommended outerwear features staples such as the Trucker Jacket and the chore coat-inspired Frisko Jacket.

Around this time of year, lots of people understandably turn their attention away from heavy denim and toward lighter fabrics that are more forgiving as temperatures rise and sweatiness ensues. But I sometimes think this shift is manufactured by the Men’s Lifestyle Publication Industrial Complex. Because I don’t know about you, but while I’ll certainly make it a point to pepper in some lightweight chinos and linen over the next few months, it’s not like I’m about to send all my jeans into storage until October.

All of which is to say…Levi’s is having a crazy sale right now, with just about everything on the site marked down by 30% and everything that was already discounted now marked down an additional 40% off, and you should probably buy something.

Now, in terms of what you should buy, I don’t really know. Jeans are personal, and given that you are a grown man, I will assume you have some understanding of which Levi’s style numbers work best for you. Maybe you’re a 541 Athletic Taper guy who never skips a set of squats. Maybe you were permanently changed by Kendrick’s Super Bowl performance and you’re committed to your 567 flares. Or maybe, no matter what the internet has to say about it, you refuse to ditch your slim-fitting 511s or, heaven forbid, your painted-on 510s.

For the purpose of today’s newsletter, I’m gonna keep my picks right down the center, focusing on classic straight fits like the 501 and the 505, plus a bit of spring-appropriate outerwear.

For my money, this is the best deal of the entire sale. A perfect wash, higher quality than the rest of the standard line, and for less than $60. Absolutely bananas.

I’ve been getting more and more into black jeans lately, and this non-stretchy, non-faded 505 version is very appealing.

That said, one concession I do like to make with my denim come summertime is to lean into some lighter colors — tack on a relaxed fit like on these 555s, and you’re off to the races.

A stellar version of “black” jeans that are actually gray. Always a favorite.

Full disclosure: at this point in my life, I don’t have the patience or energy to deal with the whole “shrink-to-fit” process, but I do think everyone should try it at least once.

A stone-cold classic, an absolute staple. For just $77.

If your preference in outerwear leans more chore coat than trucker.
