If you order shoes from the other side of the world, pay a premium and have to wait a month or longer for them to arrive … well, there better be a good number you can put on that.
Try 124.
As in 124 Shoes, a made-to-order footwear brand — based in Australia, but crafted in Italy, Spain and Portugal — which takes up to a month to hand-craft their line of made-to-order leather Chukkas, derbies and loafers.
“Our philosophy is to offer quality original footwear in limited quantities, fitting between luxury brands and mass-market retailers,” notes 124’s website. Instead of winning on price like a direct-to-consumer brand, the cordwainers here are touting their craftsmanship and longer lifespan of handmade shoes (all produced via an interesting assortment of leathers). As well, you’re still getting designer shoes for closer to $650 than $2,000.
A few newer styles from 124 we dug:
The Shoto Ankle Boot, crafted from washed and brushed deer hide and finished with a rugged Blake Rapid construction under the sole and insole. They’re only making 12 of ‘em.
The Lemargo Lace Up Derby, a deep green lace up finished with a washed and brushed buffalo leather, and featuring an exposed shank.
Not everyone can pull this off, but the handwoven Damy Lace Up Derby is crafted from supple kangaroo leather and will pretty much standout anywhere you go.
