After losing to Floyd Mayweather in a much-hyped boxing match, Conor McGregor has been laying low. He wasn’t at UFC 216 this past Saturday, which saw Tony Ferguson best Kevin Lee for the interim lightweight title. Had he been there, notes The Ringer, he would’ve heard Ferguson call him out: “Where you at, McNuggets?” Ferguson screamed. “I’ll kick your ass. Defend or vacate!”
That brings up the elephant in the room: McGregor’s UFC lightweight championship belt, which he still lays claim to. And it’s not just Ferguson who’ll be lining up to get a crack at the title.
As Chuck Mindenhall argues, Ferguson’s the most likely opponent, but others include Nate Diaz, who’s already beaten McGregor once; Pauli Malignaggi, a retired boxer, who sparred with McGregor in advance of his boxing match against Mayweather; and the future victor of the Max Holloway–Frankie Edgar featherweight title match at UFC 218 in December.
Other options include welterweight champ Tyron Woodley; Georges St-Pierre, a former welterweight champion, who will be vying for the middleweight title at UFC 217 in New York; and says Mindenhall, even Mayweather himself, in the rematch of the century. Hey, you never know?
