Let’s be clear: For most of humanity, hurricanes are a complete negative. They bring chaos and destruction, ruining property and jeopardizing lives. Elite surfers, however, aren’t wired like the rest of us. Hurricanes mean it’s time to hit the surf and take on the swells— a colloquial for the ideal long, unbroken waves.
Filmmaker Jacob Vanderwork set out to document surfers in Puerto Rico during the swell season. Some of the surfers are local, such as Brian Toth. Others flew in, like New Yorker Balaram Stack. Watch that duo, along with Marley Pugliell and other surfers ride the hurricane swells in the remarkable video below.
