In between pushing his new coach in Tampa Bay out of the door and feuding with his old one in New England, Tom Brady has somehow found a way to learn a new position that isn’t quarterback: business advisor.
According to the website for specialized investing and financial services firm Consello, Brady is a partner in the newly launched venture. “He is a proven leader, whose achievements are attained by mastering the skills of leadership, strategy, performance, and teamwork,” per 44-year-old Brady’s bio for the firm. “In addition, Tom’s deep knowledge of health and wellness is put into practice daily as he continues to set new records and push beyond limits. He has the focus, discipline and drive that creates and sustains excellence.”
Consello was founded by the ex-Teneo chief executive Declan Kelly, who resigned from his former high-end PR firm amid allegations that the 54-year-old “had inappropriately touched women while drunk” at a May 2021 fundraiser for the charity Global Citizen, according to The Financial Times. In addition to Brady, Kelly has enlisted former Uber chief technology officer Oscar Salazar and former chief Qualcomm executive Steve Mollenkopf as partners at Consello.
“Mr. Kelly became inebriated and behaved inappropriately towards some women and men at the event. He deeply regrets his actions and has personally apologized to the individuals he offended,” a spokesman for Kelly told The Wall Street Journal. When he resigned from Teneo in July of 2021, Kelly said he was leaving after an “embarrassing mistake” to avoid becoming an “ongoing distraction to the running of our company.”
Kelly co-founded Teneo with former Bill Clinton aide Doug Band. “Tom Brady is the new Bill Clinton,” an ex-Teneo staffer told The New York Post. “I can’t imagine him advising him on important M&A decisions or staying up late to write press releases,” the source said. “But Brady, like Clinton, has the ‘sparkly glitter that lures clients.’” If some of that “sparkly glitter” is able to rub off on Kelly and help shift some of the focus from what allegedly occurred last summer, all the better.
Until now, Kelly’s biggest connection to the NFL was going viral for falling asleep in the first quarter of the Kansas City Chiefs’ come-from-behind win over the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LIV.
If his new buddy Brady, who won his sixth and seventh NFL championships on either side of Super Bowl LIV, had been playing in the game, perhaps Kelly would’ve been able to stay awake.
