Tiger Woods' Strong Finish at US Open Can't Save His Tournament

Tiger Woods’ performance at the 2019 U.S. Open can be summed up in four words: too little, too late.

Shooting over the weekend at Pebble Beach, the 43-year-old dug himself into a hole he was not able to climb out of despite a strong final round on Sunday that saw him shoot 2-under to end his week at 2-under.

Entering the final round at Pebble even for the tournament, Woods bogeyed four of the first six holes on Sunday and looked like he was headed for disaster. However, Woods closed his round with six birdies, including one on 13.

Woods’ finish at a two-under 69 was his lowest final round at a U.S. Open in 10 years.

“I wish I would have known because I would have turned it around a little earlier than that,” he said afterward. “Again, got off to another crappy start and was able to fight it off. Turned back around and got it to under par for the week which is — normally it’s a good thing, but this week the guys are definitely taking to it.”

As good as Woods was on Sunday, U.S. Open winner Gary Woodland was better, capping his day with 30-foot birdie putt on 18 that was a fitting exclamation point on a dominant day.

Woodland (-13) held off two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka (-10) to win on Sunday.
