Jerry Jones Says He Has “a Lot to Consider” With Jason Garrett

Following a disheartening road loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that cost the Cowboys a guaranteed playoff spot, team owner Jerry Jones said he had “a lot to consider” with regard to the future of coach Jason Garrett.

Speaking to USA Today following the Cowboys’ s 17-9 defeat against the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, Jones was upset but stopped short of saying he was going to fire Garrett.

“It leaves, from my perspective, a lot to consider here,” Jones said. “This was a little bit of a surprise. I didn’t see the Chicago Bears game coming (a 31-24 loss in Week 14) and this one was a surprise. I thought we were prepared to play. I thought we could play better out here. I’m disappointed.”

With the loss, the Cowboys (7-8) need to beat the Redskins and have the Eagles lose to the Giants in order to make the playoffs.

If that doesn’t happen, and it seems unlikely it will, then Garrett’s ninth full season of the coach of the Cowboys will likely be his last. Though Dallas has won three NFC East titles with him at the helm, the Cowboys have never advanced beyond the NFC divisional round with Garrett running things.

“We shouldn’t have been here,” Jones said. “You ought to be able to take a game like this and not let it impact you from being able to get into the tournament. We just needed to come here and play well, and we didn’t. It’s what it is. We’re past the point of who’s it on. We’ve just got to look at what it is.”

Adding insult to injury yesterday, the Cowboys were stuck in Philadelphia after their loss to the Eagles became the team charter flight was deemed “not viable” to fly out.

Instead of heading to the airport after the loss, players, coaches, team personnel and reporters who travel with the Cowboys waited on buses outside Lincoln Financial Field while Eagles fans celebrated their win in the parking lot.
