How Close Did Odell Beckham Jr. Come to Joining the Patriots?

Giants had explored trades for star receiver and New England had been most aggressive in talks, says NBC Pro Live's Chris Simms.

Imagine how good Odell Beckham Jr. could be with Tom Brady throwing him the ball.

That scenario reportedly came a lot closer to fruition last off-season than fans previously realized, because the New York Giants were actively shopping their star — and Brady’s New England Patriots were the most aggressive in pursuit.

At least, that’s the scuttlebutt that Chris Simms reported Monday on Pro Football Talk Live: “The thing that stopped the trade covnversation over Odell Beckham Jr. is that the team that was most aggressive pursuing him was the New England Patriots. … I think Giants got cold feet and said, ‘Wait, New England wants him? Uh oh.’

“Maybe we should keep him on our own, instead of it being thrown in our face and him going to win a Super Bowl with the Pats.”

The Patriots, of course, weren’t able to pry the superstar away, and ended up trading for Brandin Cooks instead. Brady finished the season with his sixth Super Bowl title anyway.
