San Francisco 49ers fans have been waiting years for a playoff victory. On Saturday night, in a divisional round matchup against the visiting Minnesota Vikings, the home team triumphed in a decisive 27-10 win. The first quarter ended with the two teams in a 7-7 tie. After that, the 49ers began to open things up, building up their lead over the Vikings over the next 45 minutes.
Immense credit is due to the 49ers defense, led by Richard Sherman. All told, they held the Vikings offense to a total of 6 first downs in the entire game. If your reaction to that is to think, “That’s a very small number,” you are correct. It’s one of the strongest defensive performances in NFL postseason history, in fact. Sherman also intercepted a Vikings pass in the 3rd quarter, paving the way for a 49ers touchdown.

Not to be outdone, the 49ers offense also had a commanding game, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo earning his first playoff victory and Tevin Coleman amassing 22 carries and 2 touchdowns.

San Francisco now advances to the NFC Championship Game, set to take place on January 19. The 49ers will host that game as well, offering them an opportunity to make their postseason run even deeper.
