In recent years, crispy, chunky, 10-wears-before-it’s-comfy raw denim has dominated the jean game.
And we’re still on board with that — for six months of the year.
But right now it’s summer, and that means you need pants that won’t make you feel like the Tin Man in Timbuktu.
Best to park your hind quarters in a pair from MOTHER Denim, an L.A.-based company that just launched a line of soft, distressed jeans that fit like a glove and ride like linen.
MOTHER was founded in 2010 by denim-industry vets Tim Kaeding and Lela Becker. For the last eight years, they’ve been earning praise for their diverse women’s offerings. And now they’re coming for the fellas.
The first men’s collection from the brand starts with Japanese and Italian denims and then embellishes it with some elasthane for a slight stretch and a perfect summer weight. They have three fits: The Joint (skinny), The Neat (straight tapered leg) and The Chaser (standard taper).
You can try on a pair in the flesh at Ron Herman, or try your luck with their online shop.
And if you’re looking to round out your wardrobe, MOTHER also makes T-shirts, hoodies and some raffish runners. We especially like The Buster, a supima tee with a faded rose on the left breast, and the City Slicker, a cowboy-style denim button down.
Looks like that Canadian tux is back on the menu.
