Old-line audiophiles may remember the original Sennheisser Orpheus HE-90 headphones from the ‘90s. They’re headphones that have been known to make people cry. Only 300 were made. Cost $16K. In 1991.
Now it’s 2015, and Sennheiser has announced the next generation Orpheus headphones, this time with a price tag of $55,000 — making it the world’s undisputed most expensive ear can ever.
In development for the past 10 years, Orpheus 2.0 builds on the original headphone’s impressive electrostatic design with the accompanying transistor tube amplifier cut from Carrara marble. To add to the clarity, a set of Cool Class A MOS-FET amps have been integrated right into the ear cups, which are built from solid aluminum with pads cut from soft, supple leather.
Release date is set for mid-2016. Until then, it’s worth the ogle. Be sure to visit Sennheisier for all the details, and more looks below.
