It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with the Benchmade Bugout. Originally designed with backpackers and avid outdoorists in mind, it’s a lightweight manual folder that features a 3.24-inch drop-point blade, but it weighs under two ounces. Benchmade hails it as the perfect blade for the modern adventurer, but now we have another reason to love this pocket knife: it’s fully customizable.

You’ve probably seen that advertising from knifemakers before. When we hear of custom pocket knives, we’ve come to assume that means you can change the color of the handle or add a personal engraving. But unlike most pocket knife customizers, Benchmade lets you modify nearly every aspect of the knife, which is exactly what we did. Start with either a plain or partially serrated blade and choose from a list of steels that include S30V, M4, S90V and even a Damascus steel option from Damasteel. As if you’re spec’ing out a car, the customizer allows you to reposition and rotate your Bugout to see what it looks like from every angle.

Once you’ve selected your blade, Benchmade lets you laser mark either side (or both) before moving onto the handle. From there, options include high-end materials such as titanium and carbon fiber, as well as glass-filled nylon and G10 that come in a range of colors. You can even select the color of the screws, thumb stud and hardware. According to Benchmade’s calculations, there are exactly 479,760 possible combinations when all is said and done, so there’s a good chance nobody else will have the same Bugout as you.

This endless customization is a reflection of the Bugout’s unrelenting popularity. Even as Benchmade continues to unveil new pocket knives — we’ve recently fallen in love with the Auto Fact — we keep coming back to the Bugout due to its lightweight construction and unrelenting reliability. Now if only we could find an excuse to build another one.
