What’s the coldest weather you’ve ever encountered? I asked myself that question last winter when I stepped outside in Wichita, Kansas to a temperature reading of -15°F. My hands grew stiff as I fumbled for my keys, and my face slowly froze like water turning to ice. Of course, most of us won’t encounter such brutal conditions for more than a day or two each year, but it pays to be prepared when they occur. That’s why Carhartt built the Yukon Extremes collection to defend against cold weather.

Originally unveiled over 25 years ago, the updated collection is both warmer and more durable without adding unwanted weight. It’s also the first time Carhartt has made this gear available to women, and the first time they’ve introduced a Yukon Extremes fleece to the lineup.

While the updated selection includes jackets, bibs, coats and vests, it was the Wind Fighter Fleece Active Jacket that caught my eye. Perfect for days when it’s cold outside but not so cold as to warrant a heavy parka, this jacket employs low-pile Sherpa fleece for warmth and Cordura fabric that adds durability to high-wear areas through the shoulders and arms. It also makes use of Carhartt’s partnership with 3M, adding reflective panels that boost visibility whether you’re out for an evening walk or shoveling the driveway in the early morning.

As the weather here in New York City shifts between chilly mornings and mild afternoons, I threw on this durable fleece before the sun came up to see what it could do. Sporting a long-sleeve cotton tee underneath, I was surprised to find the jacket could supply plenty of warmth despite its lightweight design. The lack of bulky fabrics allowed me to move quickly through crosswalks and the zippered pockets offered a refuge for my hands from the cold. And while I’ve exclusively worn fleece jackets made by major outdoor brands, I’m happy to report that Carhartt’s Yukon Extremes fleece has earned a permanent place in my winter wardrobe.

All told, Carhartt’s latest updates aren’t superficial, but rather, intentional and relevant. Even if you don’t find yourself battling brutal cold this winter, consider adding the Yukon Extremes collection to your ensemble, or gift it to someone you know that’s always complaining come winter. These overhauled threads will not disappoint.
