DeLorean Showed Off an Alpha5 Prototype at Pebble Beach

It's a big step towards making this a reality

There’s been a lot of anticipation brewing for the Alpha5 — the electric vehicle that marks the high-profile return of the DeLorean name to automaking. Up until this point, there’s been no small amount of buzz about the designs, which both hearken back to the 1980s heyday of the previous version of the automaker and feel well-suited for the car market in 2022. That said, this isn’t the first time that a DeLorean comeback has been spoken about, and it’s understandable that some automotive enthusiasts might want to see a little more before going all-in on the company’s revival.

This week brought us a lot closer to that moment. At this year’s Pebble Beach Automotive Week, DeLorean unveiled a prototype for the Alpha5.

As IGN pointed out in their report on the vehicle, this is a functional prototype. It’s also not the only harbinger of DeLorean’s future on display at Pebble Beach; this weekend, the company is set to show off two new concept vehicles to offer a roadmap — pun somewhat intended — for where the marque is headed.

DeLorean’s Pebble Beach presence also included a trio of concept cars that demonstrated how the DMC-12 evolved into the Alpha5 — the Alpha4, for instance, which is a hydrogen-powered SUV. “Our goal was to bridge the gap between the past and the future, so we produced extensions of the DMC-12 that would have been icons in their time to create the next generation of vehicles, starting with the Alpha5,” said DeLorean CEO Joost de Vries in a statement.

And if you’ve ever wanted to look at an Alpha5 side by side with a DMC-12, albeit in much smaller form, there’s a version of the car for that as well.
