Like most performers these days, John Mulaney has found himself with a little extra time on his hands as most things that involve getting up in front of a live audience remain out of the question thanks to COVID-19. But, we’re happy to report, the comedian has found a way to stay busy: he has officially joined Late Night with Seth Meyers as a staff writer.

Producer Mike Shoemaker revealed the news on Twitter on Tuesday night, writing, “John Mulaney likes to work so this week he officially joined Late Night with @SethMeyers as a staff writer. I hope he stays for 100 years but I will settle for ‘as long as John wants.’” A representative for NBC confirmed to Vulture that Mulaney has, in fact, really joined the show as a staff writer and that the deal is really that he can stay as long as he wants.

His first sketch for the show as a writer features Mulaney wearing the same exact outfit he wore for his appearance as a guest on the show last week — including the trenchcoat Julian Casablancas gifted him after he hosted SNL on Halloween — but it was clearly filmed after the election results came in, because it features Mulaney and Meyers discussing the role ghosts, ghouls and dybbuks played in Joe Biden’s victory. (It turns out you haven’t truly lived until you’ve heard Mulaney casually drop a line like “Ruth Bader Ghostberg” into conversation.)

Mulaney and Meyers obviously go way back; the stand-up comedian worked as a writer on Saturday Night Live when Meyers was “Weekend Update” anchor and head writer on the show, and he famously wrote the “Stefan” bits performed by Bill Hader and Meyers.

There’s no word on how long he plans to stick around, but you can watch his first sketch as a Late Night staff writer below.
