This week saw the first two confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the NFL players’ community, with Los Angeles Rams center Brian Allen and Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller both testing positive for the virus. On Friday, Miller spoke with DenverBroncos.com reporter Phil Milani about how he’s feeling about the positive test, as well as what he’s doing now that he’s in recovery mode.

Miller first became aware that something was wrong when he had a bad cough that wouldn’t improve. Given that he has asthma, he was told to seek treatment by Broncos doctor Steven Geraghty when his nebulizer did provide the relief it usually does. That led to him taking a test, which came out positive.

Miller said he was caught by surprise, as he felt he had done everything right to avoid contracting the virus:

It’s super serious. I try to keep my body in tip-top shape. I try to be Superman. I try to make things happen. I try to stay up on my health. I know if I can get it, then I know that anybody can get it. I want people to really take it seriously. […] When I found out that I had it, I can’t even lie. I was shocked. I was nervous. I wanted to call my mom and call my dad and let everybody know. But at the same time I wanted to let them know I was fine and I was OK.

However, even with the positive result, Miller is staying positive; in his conversation with Milani, he tried to put the situation in perspective with how lucky he has been in his career:

It’s like, ‘Man, me? Von? Come on!’ But that’s like the story of my life. I knew I took it seriously. It’s so easy to ask, ‘Why me?’ If you ask, ‘Why me?’ in an unfortunate situation like this, I’ve got to ask, ‘Why did we win the Super Bowl? Why was I Super Bowl MVP?’

So far, no other members of the Broncos organization have tested positive for COVID-19. Miller will undergo the standard 14-day quarantine while he recovers, and he stressed that he wanted to share how he’s dealing with it to help other people understand the seriousness of social distancing and being responsible.
