Even though he didn’t pitch against Houston over the weekend, Cincinnati Reds ace Trevor Bauer still managed to troll the Astros for their 2017 sign-stealing scandal.
In a start against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, Bauer took the mound wearing custom Nike cleats covered in trash cans in a clear nod to Houston’s sign-stealing. (Houston players banged on trash cans to inform Astros batters what pitch they expected to be thrown.)
A few months ago, Bauer wore a t-shirt trolling the Astros prior to MLB’s restart.
In February, Bauer vowed he was going to keep bringing up Houston’s sign-stealing scandal throughout the 2020 season.
“I’m not going to let them forget the fact that they are hypocrites, they are cheaters, they’ve stolen from a lot of other people and the game itself,” Bauer said. “I’m probably going to get myself in trouble for saying all of this different stuff, but it’s how I feel. I think it’s important to stand up and say something because I’m not afraid of the backlash. … We’re all pissed. If no one ever comes out and says anything, then nothing gets done.”
So far, he’s more than followed through on his promise to keep trolling the Astros.
One of the leading contenders to win the National League Cy Young award, Bauer has a 4-4 record after 10 starts this season and a 1.80 ERA.
